Heya — what restrictions might there be on fires/fire spinning? Will there be any kind of effigy burn/giant bonfire and pre-burn fire show & if so who might one talk to about jumping in on that action?

Thanks!

Hi dyslexia:

Lakes of Fire will follow the national fire safety guidelines. If you’ve spun fire at Burning Man, you should be familiar with these protocols.

There will be a central effigy on Saturday night, as well as a conclave before the big burn, for fire performances to take place. In a short while, we’ll have contact information for our Fire Safety/Conclave Team ready to go, as well as a lot more details about Fire Safety, Conclave, and all things inferno-related.

Stay tuned!

It is roughly 2 hours by car from Chicago.

Are motor homes welcome at the event?

Info-bot says:
04/06/2009

There will be parking available for RV’s, but there are no brown water/black water hookups on the site.

All you have to do is by a ticket. They should be on sale in a matter of days!

Who is playing? Similar to Resonate Chicago?

Info-bot says:

Our stage will be open to anyone who wants to participate. Details still emerging.

Chris,
I’d also suggest if you’re interested in playing, performing or building art for Lakes of Fire you’re welcome to create a theme camp and Bring It! As an all participant created event we welcome enthusiasm like that.

I think it’s kind of strange to buy a ticket without knowing anything about the venue. Why can’t you tell us where it is before buying a ticket?

Info-bot says:
05/05/2009

Our location for 2009 was in Lacota, Michigan.

Lulu says:
05/06/2009

In the post on Basic Information/gate hours, etc., it says “Participants only! No spectators please.”

What does this mean?

Can I buy a ticket and attend Lakes of Fire just to watch the events and enjoy the experience? Or do I have to create art or perform in order to come?

This would be my 1st Burning Man-type event so it’s not clear who exactly is invited….

Thanks!

Good Question, Lulu!

“Participants only, no spectators please!” does NOT mean that you have to think up some huge art creation or performance piece to bring out, although if that’s your bag – hey, awesome! What it DOES mean is that we ask everyone to be involved in the event, and not just stand around gawking. Participating can be as simple a thing as dancing! It can be interacting with other people’s artwork. It can be setting up a little sandwich booth outside your tent, and giving away sandwiches one afternoon . . . or gin and tonics! It can be spinning fire, or even just cooking dinner for your friends and camp-mates. There also a myriad of volunteering positions that are necessary to keep this event running – working the gate, the greeters’ station, the earth guardians, etc. (You can find more about these by going to the Volunteer-ipate page.) All of these are modes of participation.

What’s NOT wanted is for people to show up, keep to themselves, never leave their campsite, stare at the effigy burn for an hour, then hit the sack and go home in the morning . . . or worse, to simply show up at 6:00 on Saturday for the big fire, and then drive home that evening.

Just bought our tickets.

We will be driving. Are we allowed to park our automobile at our campsite even if it is not an “art” vehicle?

I guess I’m wondering whether I need to pack with the assumption that things will be lugged in.

My First Burn! How exciting!!!

Thanks so much to the land owner and all the volunteers!!

Info-bot says:

Non-mutant vehicles are welcome to drive to their campsites for drop-off, and load-out. Beyond that, they will be asked t park in our parking area. Don’t worry – it’s not a long haul.

Will there be electricity available?

Info-bot says:
05/08/2009

There is a limited amount of electricity available at the site – but it will be largely used up by infrastructure and organizational needs.

Please bring a generator if you plan to use electricity.

Bought a ticket on the third day after they went on sale. I know I should be patient but the anticipation is getting to me. When can I expect to receive the ticket in the mail?
Thanks!

It will be in a matter of a few days . . . contacting fastticketing@gmail.com for more details.

Hi! Is there an actual lake for swimming at this location? If not, anyone doing a community shower? Is water available on site or is it pack it in, pack it out?

Info-bot says:
05/18/2009

Info-bot will put it this way. No, our site is not located ON the water. South Haven beach on Lake Michigan, however, is roughly 12 miles away. We are hoping that some motie of a volunteer-ipator may want to drive people to the beach and from.

GLEA Inc. (Great Lakes Experimental Arts) is not arranging trips to the beach this year.

BTW:

Please consult your Survival Guide – it is there to help you!

Potable water is not available, although you will have a shot at taking a shower.

Will there be any kind of Ice runs to MR Grocery???

Just wondering.

Info-bot says:
05/27/2009

We’re encouraging theme camps and individuals to set up group ice runs on their own. Mr. Grocery will be an excellent resource for you – they’re just a few miles away and they’ve been warned about the freaks showing up for Ice & Beer.

Is there a LOF BBS like Playa del Fuego’s?

Info-bot says:
05/29/2009

At the moment, there is not, although we hope that the comments section on this site will serve part of that function! This is a good suggestion that has been forwarded to the appropriate cogs in the Lakes of Fire machine.

what is up with the main stage versus different sound camps? what is the difference? is the main stage open for performances?

Info-bot says:
05/29/2009

Good Question:

The main stage will be open to just about anyone who wants to perform. We’ll have a sign up sheet and some special performances, although performers may be asked to bring their own equipment. Sound camps will be totally responsible for their own programming and equipment requirements.

Our sound check is taking place this weekend, and an announcement and final performance details will be forthcoming next week.

Will there be a What Where When published? I’d like
to do a Sunday waffle-thon (with scrapple!) and share
with the community. It’s a big hit at PDF.

Info-bot says:
05/30/2009

We’ll be publishing a What Where When shortly before the event. In the meantime, if you’ve got special events and/or plans that you’d like to share with the greater community, please email them to pyrotherapist@gmail.com, or to doxie@lakesoffire.org!

ICE RUNS:
The Greeters/Rangers Camp will be coordinating at least one daily Ice Run (maybe adding Beer if’n you’ll share :) )at the Greeters Station.
When you hit the Greeters Station ask around for “T” or Widget..We’ll get you on the list. Preferences giving to those scantily clad and bearing gifts!

I’ve got a travel trailer/camper and belong to a theme camp. Will I be able to park my camper with my camp, or will I need to leave it in the parking lot? Also, if I can leave the camper with the theme camp, can I leave it hooked up to my truck?

Info-bot says:
06/08/2009

That will depend an awful lot on your placement, the size of your camp, the size of your RV & truck, etc. I would suggest contacting our placement team (doxie@lakesoffire.org, or pyrotherapist@gmail.com) to sort this out.

Is there any development on the idea for a kid-friendly zone within Hushville? My coming will kinda hinge on that, as my son’s special needs make a more general crowd experience a big roll of the melt-down dice!

Info-bot says:
06/13/2009

There is definitely going to be a kid-friendly zone in Hushville. The exact parameters and paradigms it follows will be predominantly the responsibility of the parents who are bringing kids. We encourage parents to work together and pool their resources to develop a Kidsville concept that will work best for their needs.

ME (Dan MErlo) and my wife Tara Thompson attended the regional Lakes of Fire last year 2009 and LOVED IT.

Question:
In preparing to design and submit both a ticket design AND logo, we came up against info we did not know:

*Is Lakes of Fire an “official” regional burn? That is, events like Lakes of Fire and Flipside in Texas are considered regional burns, but does that mean they are officially sanctioned or officially backed by Burning Man? What is the specific relationship if any between a regional burn and the big BRC burn? FInally, can we as regional burners use any Burning Man logos, spefically, the symbol of the Man, when designing our own regional logos?

THANKS,
DAN

Info-bot says:
01/03/2010

Yep – Lakes of Fire is a bona fide 100% OFFEESHUL Burning Man regional. You can use the image of the man and are in fact encouraged to do so.

Info-bot says:
01/04/2010

Yes, Lakes of Fire IS an officially sanctioned Burning Man event. Feel free to use the Man!
