Hey LoFers!

It was great to see so many amazing Great Lakes folks at Burning Man,
and at our several Decompressions that went down in Michigan, Chicago,
Milwaukee, and elsewhere across the region this fall. If you couldn’t
make it, don’t worry – Toronto’s Decompression is still coming up on
November 12th!

No doubt about it – heads from around the Great Lakes really know how
to get it done! Kudos to all who continue to make these amazing events
a reality.

Lakes of Fire 2012 is tentatively scheduled for June 21-24th, 2012 -
your fourth edition.

And guess what? Great Lakes Experimental Arts is THRILLED to announce
the formation of your very first Art Grants program! In order to do
this properly, though, this community needs an independent Art Grants
Committee. Please scroll to the bottom if you’d like to volunteer for
this critical and exciting task.

Speaking of volunteering, in order continue to grow Lakes of Fire, the
community, as always, needs more volunteers. Here are our currently
needed Team Leads, Co-leads, and importantly, committee, whose
creative energies are basically a requirement to keep this LoF ball
rolling!

CO-LEAD NEEDED – COMMUNICATION:
Are you internet savvy and/or clever with your words? Do you enjoy
bringing relentlessly positive and fun messages to the world? Are you
willing to sit at a desk, typing for long periods of time and poring
over tiny details? Comfortable with the idea of a BCC?

If so, you could be a major player on Team Info-bot. The Info-bot
brings people information about Lakes of Fire; and the jobs are to
inform and educate. Hard-core lovers of words, planning, the bigger
picture, knowing minor details, etc., are welcome to apply. Hit up the
current Info-bot at burn@lakesoffire.org.

CO-LEADS NEEDED – LEAVE NO TRACE
Our all-important Leave No Trace team is tasked with leaving our
homeland – wherever it is – in better shape than we found it. If you
think you can stick around until Monday or possibly even Tuesday after
2012, and you are willing to build a Leave No Trace Team, as well as
personally enact a Leave No Trace plan that works, please hit up the
Info-bot at burn@lakesoffire.org.

Willing brains must be combined with willing backs for the Leave No
Trace position.

FORMING COMMITTEE – ART GRANTS
For the first time, G.L.E.A. will be giving out art grants in 2012. To
achieve success, Lakes of Fire needs committee members from across the
entire upper Midwest/Great Lakes region . . . people who are willing
to commit to several conference calls between now and Lakes of Fire
2012, the event, as well as following up with local recipients.

Your job will be to formulate and then enact an art-granting policy
that will transparently and deliciously make Lakes of Fire an even
more amazing reality. You will create an art granting policy, decide
which applicants receive money, and then gently guide artists through
a process of dispersal, building, and public reporting that makes
Lakes of Fire even better event than it already is, through art. So
get excited, because this could be your group project!!!

Contact burn@lakesoffire.org if you’re interested in joining this committee!

Stay tuned to the website for more details!

Greetings Lofers!

Thanks one last time for making Lakes of Fire 2011: Anima Mundi the amazing experience that it was. Don’t forget to give your organizing team feedback on our participant survey. Just scroll down! It’ll only take a few minutes – PROMISE!

AFTERBURN REPORT:
You can follow this link to get the full details of our Afterburn Report.

Our full financial reports are compiled here.

If you don’t want to scroll through the entire documents, here are some of the highlights:

* Lakes of Fire 2011 had a brand new location; Lucky Lake in Montague, Michigan. http://www.luckylakecampground.com/

* Our new location brought us great new relationships and partnerships with the landowner and the local authorities.

* There was even some (basically) positive local press! Go here and here for the local press’s amusing spin on your event.

* Lakes of Fire 2011 featured 45 Theme Camps, 6 Art installations, and 7 sound camps

* Lakes of Fire 2011 sold all of its 1250 tickets, and 1180 people actually showed up to Lucky Lake campground.

* Some ticketholders may have been turned off by consistent and steady rain all Thursday – day and night. We theorize that this is why a larger percentage than usual didn’t show up.

* G.L.E.A. Inc. spent $38,815.75 making Lakes of Fire 2011 a reality, and this year’s gross receipts from our generous Great Lakes community was $52,594.13. The net profit for 2011 is $13,778.38.

* Moving forward toward to 2012 and beyond, G.L.E.A. Inc. has approximately $30,000.00 in the bank to re-invest in Lakes of Fire . . . for years to come. That’s all thanks to our generous and fabulous participants, by the way. YOU.

TEAM LEADS NEEDED:
Though our experiences at events like Lakes of Fire and Burning Man may at times SEEM to emerge spontaneously from nowhere, the events, and thus our experiences themselves, most assuredly do NOT spontaneously arrive from the ether. They happen because hardcore volunteers and organizers are willing to go about ten extra miles to make them a reality.

Are you ready to become a volunteer Team Lead? If the answer is yes, and the positions described below might be up your alley, please consider clearing the weekend of September 24th from your schedule, then go here.

RADIOS:
Managing our large collection of expensive-to-replace radios has turned into a position that demands one person’s serious attentions. If you can be detail-oriented, and can commit to being very available before, during, and for a short while after Lakes of Fire 2012, tentatively set for June 21st-24th, 2012, this position might be for you.

TICKETING:
This is a really important Team Lead that requires a great deal of internet availability, knowledge of MS Office, Google Applications, patience, and individual interactions with participants who in some cases may be confused and/or frustrated. The more familiar you are with Paypal, the better. Only absolute masters of awesome need apply.

GREAT LAKES C.O.R.E. CHALLENGE GRANT
Finally, by now your Info-bot hopes everyone has heard about the Lakes of Fire Organizers’ Challenge Grant to support the Great Lakes C.O.R.E. project: Donate here.

Give what you can, and the Lakes of Fire organizers’ team will match the wider community’s gifts up to $1,000! No donation is too large or too small, and the first thousand dollars will be DOUBLED!

That’s all until next year!

We’ll see you at the playa!

xoxoxoxo,

Greetings Burners from the Great Lakes Region!

The organizing team at Lakes of Fire/G.L.E.A. Inc. is pleased to announce a challenge grant to help the Great Lakes C.O.R.E. project get out to Black Rock City, get built, get burnt, and then get all cleaned up with no trace! Just go to this website.

Give what you can, and the Lakes of Fire organizers’ team will match the wider community’s gifts up to $1,000! No donation is too large or too small, and the first thousand dollars will be DOUBLED!

C.O.R.E PROJECT – WHAT’S THAT?
The Circle of Regional Effigies (C.O.R.E.) will be a ring of effigies surrounding the Man in Black Rock City 2011. Each effigy will be created by a community within the Burning Man Regional Network.

WHO’S INVOLVED IN THE GL-C.O.R.E?
The Great Lakes C.O.R.E. project is a collaboration between burners from Chicago, Detroit, Ann Arbor, Western Michigan, Indiana, and Milwaukee. If you want to help out, guess what? You can!!! Just check out this website.

SO WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?
We wish to represent the ‘The Great Lakes’ in the C.O.R.E. project by building a lighthouse effigy inspired by the Bacon Beacon from Lakes Of Fire 2010: A Spaced Oddity. You might have seen our smaller replica burned on Friday at Lakes of Fire 2011: Anima Mundi. While many groups that are building effigies for C.O.R.E. are coming from one city, or one event, we believe that Great Lakes burners have been networking beyond just our own personal regions – and creating a regional culture. The lighthouse is a physical symbol of this wider, Great Lakes culture.

I’D LIKE TO KNOW MORE
Swell! Go here.

Thank you for your support, and see you at Black Rock City!

THEME: ANIMA MUNDI – WHO DAT WITH THE WHAT NOW?
Anima Mundi means “the Living World,” so we’re asking: what kind of creature are you?

Here are some other thoughts on what Anima Mundi could mean.

It’s been super-swell being your Info-bot once again this year. The Info-bot will be online to answer questions and help participants participate until the afternoon of Wednesday, June 22nd. After that, you’re on your own!!

Lakes of Fire 2011: Anima Mundi, is just around the corner. Time to bring out your wild side and start thinking about the what kind of creature you are!

Lakes of Fire 2011: Anima Mundi
Thursday, June 23rd – Sunday June 26th
Lucky Lake Campground
3977 W. Wilke Road
Montague, MI 49437
(Rothbury exit)

Sorry, the last tickets for Lakes of Fire 2011 were sold this last Saturday.

If you couldn’t get tickets, we at G.L.E.A. Inc. suggest you try reaching out to your local community by going here: http://regionals.burningman.com/na_index.html Click on the green button that represents your area, and then see how to get in touch with other burners in your area. THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING!

Please remember that Lakes of Fire and G.L.E.A. Inc do NOT operate a “will call” booth, nor are there ANY cash sales at the gate. Our policy is “Won’t Call.” You are responsible for any ticketing transfers to or from other participants. If you’re over 13, bring your bar-coded ticket! If you’re under 13, a non-bar-coded ticket will suffice.

We still need more volunteers to fill in our empty slots in the Lakes of Fire volunteer Schedule this year, especially with the Parking, Greeters, Medical, LNT and Ranger Teams! Follow the link below to volunteer at: http://lwww.lakesoffire.org/volunteer-ipate/ or email breedlove@lakesoffire.org

There is more information on Fire Spinning and Flame Effects below. As a brief reminder, if you’re bringing any art piece involving fire, we need to hear from you BEFORE the event! Please write to flameeffects@lakesoffire.org and send us a description along with any plans or photos/video you might have.

To keep our agreement with the fire marshal, we need to know what’s coming, so remember to check in with us (Fire Safety and Performance). Our camp will be on the road you come in on. All flame effects will be “tagged and bagged” on the way in, but contacting us first expedites this process.

KIDS: BRING ‘EM!
Lakes of Fire is a family event that welcomes participants of all ages. Here’s a Facebook group of LoFers who put together Kidsville!

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=152841608112861

People under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a 21+ parent or guardian both at entry, as well as at all times during the event. You are responsible for the welfare of minors in your care. Please be aware that there may be adult-specific activities or theme camps, and that grown-ups may not wish to curtail their own free expression to
accommodate your children, or minors in your care.

Minors 12 years old and under will be welcome to join Lakes of Fire free of charge. Participants 13+ must pay the full ticket price.

For the protection of kids at Lakes of Fire, all parents & guardians are required to register their kids (or minors in their care) at the greeter’s station. If you fail to adequately supervise minors in your care, you will be ejected from Lakes of Fire, immediately. No exceptions.

PETS: SORRY!
With the specific exception of ADA Qualified assistance dogs, pets are NOT allowed at Lakes of Fire. The Event volunteers have chosen to adhere to this rule, and we have puppies too. Your pet will be turned away at the gate and you won’t be admitted until you return without any pets.

PHOTOGRAPHY: PROCEED WITH RESPECT!
Lakes of Fire is a private event, and we expect participants to approach photography with respect for others. There is no filming without express permission. You have ultimate responsibility for your image, and should ask photographers or videographers how your image will be used. You must ask permission before photographing someone, and avoid photography that could be intrusive of someone’s privacy. Do not take or publish, in any manner, ANY unauthorized pictures of any human subject, or any pictures for a commercial purpose. We reserve the right to act on any violation of these guidelines by requiring erasure of images, or by removing violators of these policies from Lakes of Fire.

No commercial use of photographs taken at Lakes of Fire is allowed without the express written permission of Great Lakes Experimental Arts, Inc.

)( FIRE: YOU KNOW YOU LOVE IT!
Fire is a spectacular part of our event. Volunteers are working with local fire authorities to safely enact the best fire effects possible at Lakes of Fire.

PERSONAL CAMPFIRES– You can make small personal campfires in the provided fire rings or bring fire barrels. Please use common sense. Clear an area around your fire, don’t have it too near your tent, and keep some water or dirt on hand to put it out if the wind kicks up. Do not, ever, leave a fire unattended!

)( FIRE CONCLAVE– Sorry. Signups for spinning fire in conclave are closed.

Details of participating with Conclave will be sent via email to conclave applicants. As all fire art should be, Conclave is run in a safe, sane and sober (and legal) manner. Those who wish to participate in conclave will be required to follow that motto and any other requirements of the Shin, Doxie (shin@lakesoffire.org).

FIRE SPINNING– All participants are welcome to spin fire at their own risk as long as proper safety procedures for your art are followed. Our deal with the local authorities stipulates that all fire on the grounds–including poi/tools and any other fire art — will be safe and legal. Not sure how to do that? We will have a pamphlet for all fire artists at the gate. A few things to remember: Never leave unattended fuel on the ground, always have a fire safety with you with
an extinguisher and/or wet towels on hand.

Please do not spin fire in the pine woods; the dried needles are very fire prone and the land owner politlely requests that we not set his woods on fire! Again, Safe, Sane and Sober spinning!

)( FIRE SCULPTURES, POOFERS AND OTHER FLAME EFFECTS– The big stuff, if you will. Even big stuff needs to abide by the Safe, Sane and Sober motto of operation. If you wish to bring larger-scale fire art, you must contact Fire Safety Team Co-Lead – Russian Wulfgar at flameeffects@lakesoffire.org. Note: this is for non-poi/spinning flame effects, Group II and above. Failure to contact the Fire Safety team regarding these devices will be grounds for their disuse during the event. These devices can only be used in open areas, not among the tents. The Fire Chief has a right to inspect them for safety. They must be attended at all times, have emergency shut-off valves in easy reach and have a fire extinguisher nearby.

The Fire Safety & Performance Team is here for your safety! FSPT staff has the right to shut down any use of fire that threatens other attendees, endangers the event, or breaks our agreement with the local fire authorities. Failure to abide with Fire Safety protocols may be grounds for your immediate removal from this event. FSPT recognizes and abides by NFPA Section 160 and all other applicable laws and expects fire artists to do the same.

ART CARS & MUTANT VEHICLES!
Mutant vehicles are a unique type of art that is welcome to roam Lakes of Fire. If it has a motor and is not completely powered by human propulsion, it’s considered an Art Car or Mutant Vehicle. Art Cars typically resemble the shape of the vehicle they’re made out of and are radically decorated, turning a car into a mobile work of art. Mutant Vehicles however, are typically radically modified/mutated vehicles transformed to look like something other then a car or truck.

Both Art Cars and Mutant Vehicles are welcome at Lakes of Fire. Owners are required to pre-register, sign a waiver, and license their mobile art at the Greeter’s station. Owners are responsible for the use and behavior of their vehicle during the event regardless of who drives it, and agree to only drive in approved areas of the event, to yield to pedestrians, bicycle, Ranger, and Medical traffic.

That’s all for now!

See you at Lakes of Fire in just two short weeks!

Hi Everyone!

Well, the weather’s getting warmer, and Lakes of Fire 2011: Anima Mundi, is just three weeks away!

WANNA BE A LAKES OF FIRE RANGER?
Lakes of Fire Rangers are looking for your help this year. This is an exciting opportunity to spend a couple hours helping other participants have a safe and enjoyable event. In order to ranger at LoF you must first complete a training session. This year we will have 3 sessions available.

Detroit-Sunday June 12th at the Detroit Temple 1pm

Chicago-Wednesday June 15th at Shoebocks’s house 7PM (emaildrshoebocks@gmail.com for address and directions)

LoF on site-Friday June 24th at 2PM meet at Ranger HQ.

These trainings typically last 2 hours and are completely separate from Black Rock Ranger training. If you have any questions about rangering at Lakes of Fire please email rangers@lakesoffire.org.

Here’s some critical information, specially designed to prevent you from having any less of a good time.

SOUND: PROTOCOLS
All sound protocols are subject to change, pending further site inspection, and a wide variety of circumstances both before and during Lakes of Fire 2011: Anima Mundi.

Excessive sound is the single most likely reason that law enforcement officers will visit Lakes of Fire and, incidentally, your campsite. Speakers, in general should be placed OUT from the center of the event.

The protocols are as follows.

1) You must report the sound equipment you have with you at the Gate, upon entry, even if it’s just a boom-box.

2) The Sound Squad (Rangers, Organizers, and Sound Team Volunteers) may ask you to turn your volume down to safer levels, or even completely off. Respect these requests.

3) All sound equipment 200 Watts or larger *must* be registered prior to the event on the Lakes of Fire theme camp registration page -http://www.lakesoffire.org/event/theme-camps/ If you are bringing lower powered sound equipment or musical instruments, please check with the Gate
volunteers for information on where to set up your camp. Ask for a placement or Sound Squad member at the Gate to get your placement finalized.

4) You may not use sub-woofers after 11:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 23th; 11:59 P.M. on Friday, June 24th; or 2:00 A.M. on Sunday, June 25th. Sub-woofers can be turned on again at 11:00 A.M. Friday- Sunday.

5) Total decibel output may not be more than 95 dB at 20 paces/40 feet after midnight, and may be no more than 90 dB at 20 paces/40feet after 2:00 A.M.

The Sound Squad will be monitoring sound-levels with decibel-readers at all times. Failure to comply with their requests will be grounds for your removal from the event. If the police arrive with noise complaints, they may be directed toward camps which are suspected of violating our Sound Policies. Unfortunately, Lakes of Fire 2011 is not blessed with five square miles of open playa. We have a relatively small location, and local neighbors on whose good humor this event
depends. The Sound Squad asks that all camps and participants respect the needs of our neighbors and keep sound output within reasonable levels.

EXODUS: GET OUTTA HERE!
Lakes of Fire ends at 3:00 PM, Sunday, June 26th. All participants must be packed up (including your trash!) and out of the gate by that time. No exceptions. This allows DPW and EG volunteers to do their job. If you’d like to volunteer, see the volunteers section. Please adhere to Exodus directions from the Gate/Exodus staff. It is vital that the local community be respected as people leave the event. This means that everything you pack out ends up at your own home, NOT on the side of the road or in private dumpsters!

DPW : WORKIN’ IT!
Lakes of Fire happens in part through the hard work of a few bold soldiers known as the epartment of Public Works. Our focus is providing the infrastructure, power, and grunt necessary for the event to run smoothly. The DPW reminds you that if it’s not yours, don’t mess with it. Things put in place by LoF DPW, like signage and safety barriers, are there for a reason. Please respect those things and avoid damaging or altering them, lest you be damaged or altered.

RANGERS: YOUR FRIENDS.
Rangers are participants just like you. They are the eyes and ears of the event, and their purpose as volunteers is to facilitate a positive and safe environment for their fellow participants. Rangers wear khaki clothing with a LOF Ranger logo. They will be walking around during the entirety of the event and are easily flagged down. You can also stop by the central Ranger station, which can be found on the map.

Rangers prefer that you practice radical self reliance first and ask them for help second. However, all participants are encouraged to ask for assistance when they need it. Make sure to hug Rangers as they pass by your camp. That way you know they aren’t just a robot army.

MEDICAL: YOU NEED A HERO?
A volunteer Medical Team will be on hand to assist and triage any medical problems or injuries. On-duty Medical Team members can be identified by their yellow t-shirts. Additionally, any Ranger will also be able to assist you in obtaining medical assistance. The Medical Tent will be clearly marked on the Lakes of Fire map. You may seek assistance there directly. They will then be
able to facilitate bringing you to the Medical Tent or the ambulance to you if necessary.

Self-reliance is one of the tenets of Burning Man. Please help us to help you by bringing a basic first-aid kit with each group, and knowing how to use the contents. If you have a pre-existing Medical condition that you feel may become a problem during the event, please make a campmate(s) aware of it so that they may be of assistance to the Medical Team. If you have any questions, feel free to approach any on-duty medical personnel.

Please do not call 911 directly yourself. Instead route the request through a Ranger or Medical Team member so that we remain “in the loop” and can start emergency first-aid treatment immediately, and to insure the responding personnel have appropriate information to facilitate their
response. In the event you need to be evacuated to a hospital or wish to travel to one yourself, contact the Medical Team as they will have location information on the local hospital’s location.

That all for now!

Without knowing this important information, you risk having way less
of a good time, or possibly not even being admitted, which is no fun
at all.

Lakes of Fire 2011′s theme is Anima Mundi – “The Living World.” Find
out more <a href=http://www.lakesoffire.org/2011/02/12/lakes-of-fire-2011-theme-announced/">here: http://www.lakesoffire.org/2011/02/12/lakes-of-fire-2011-theme-announced/.

and in fact, necessary. You can sign up here!
http://www.lakesoffire.org/event/theme-camps/.

VOLUNTEERS: WEED NEED YOU!
Lakes of Fire is a 100% volunteer run event. Whether it’s building the
mighty effigy, organizing the Amaze-ing parking lot, or even
constructing the handy-dandy Survival Guide, everything is done by
volunteers exactly like you. So don’t just participate,
volunteer-ipate! And become an integral part of Lakes of Fire. We’ve
got a place for you no matter what your skill set. If you think you’d
like to join our motley crew of do-ers, moties and super(wo)mans,
please sign up here. http://www.lakesoffire.org/event/volunteer-ipate/

Or, you can contact Breedlove at breedlove@lakesoffire.org.

LEAVE NO TRACE: THE PRIME DIRECTIVE
Leave No Trace is arguably our most cherished principle. In simplest
terms, this means that we must leave the site in better condition than
we found it, leaving absolutely no evidence of our having been there.
Each participant must remove all items they brought with them –
including their trash – when they leave the site. We also ask that
each participant helps clean the full site by picking up any Matter
Out Of Place (MOOP) that they encounter during the event. If you
smoke, bring a portable ash tray so that you don’t have to drop your
butts on the ground. Please bring trash bags and other waste
receptacles to take your trash and recycling home with you at the end
of the event. During and after the event, our team of awesome Earth
Guardians will be staying late to make sure the site is left in better
shape then we found it.

Please remember that it’s not always a long distance from a little
harmless-seeming fun to a MOOP disaster – like a water balloon fight,
for example! Be ready to pick up ANYTHING that falls to the earth, or
better yet, don’t even bring potential MOOP disasters.

Volunteers for Earth Guardian Grounds Patrol Shifts and final Clean
Sweep Crew are welcome. Volunteer in advance of the event through
LakesofFire.org.

EFFIGY: YOUR BIG FIRE!
The Effigy is our large centrally-located wooden sculpture, designed
to reflect the yearly theme of the event. The burning of the Effigy is
the pinnacle of Lakes of Fire; the culminating part of this event. The
Effigy team works very hard, long hours to build it for your
enjoyment. Please respect it by not smoking, using open flame,
intentionally damaging, burning or disrespecting the piece in any way.
The Effigy will be burned on the final night of Lakes of Fire
(Saturday). Until then, it is there for your enjoyment, reflection,
pictures, and happiness. A method of sacrifice/offering/prayer/memory
additions of your own to the Effigy will be detailed at the event.

PARKING: LIMITED
Please consider car-pooling with friends, family, camp-mates, or
random strangers. Lakes of Fire’s site has parking available, but it
is limited. Upon arrival, you may drop off your gear at your location,
and then you will be asked-politely, at first-to return your car to
the parking lot. Our Parking Team is helpful and rarely abusive. These
lovely people will find you a parking place that will ensure that
everyone will be able to get their car out in case of an emergency or
other urgent need to leave the event. We ask . . . if you do have to
leave . . . when you return, please stop back at parking for us to
find you another parking spot. The only vehicles that will be allowed
in campsites are those being used for “car camping.” Car camping means that you are using your vehicle to sleep in, not that you are just too lazy to unpack what you need at your campsite. These important protocols are in place to prevent a traffic nightmare during Exodus, when everyone is leaving, all at once.

The Parking Team is a gang of fun-lovin moties who always need more joy. Consider volunteering here!
That’s it for this week!

Aloha!

Summer is right around the corner, and Great Lakes Experimental Arts, Inc. wants you to know that tickets for Lakes of Fire 2011: Anima Mundi are currently on sale through the website: http://blackrocktickets.com/buy/12/

Tickets will remain on sale until sold out, or until Saturday, June 11, 2011, 11:59 P.M. E.S.T., whichever comes first. Get your tickets soon! We are approximately 90% sold out, so don’t delay!

Lakes of Fire volunteer organizers insist, in a friendly way, that you read the Survival Guide, found here: http://www.lakesoffire.org/survival-guide/ . . . . . like, all of it!

If you’re unaware of this important info, you risk being removed or denied entry into Lakes of Fire! And that’s no fun at all.

Though the ticket price at the higher tier has increased, Lakes of Fire remains a very affordable experience. We accomplish this by enacting a 100% volunteer-run event. http://www.lakesoffire.org/volunteer-ipate/

THEME CAMPS, ARTISTS, & WORKSHOP EDUCATORS:
Theme Camps, Workshops and Art Installations are your gift to the LoF community! This is your chance to radically express your vision and share with the everyone. With your participation, LoF becomes a unique expression in time, the year it was better!

When you register, your vision gets support from the Placement Team. You get a reserved spot that fits your needs and you get marked on the LoF 2011 map. When you sign up on the What Where When bulletin, you get free marketing for your space or event.

This year we already have a cinema, performance stage, supper club, improv dice, a lighthouse maquette, hoop making, Kidville, henna, frontier science, dancing, chilling, snuggling, body macrame, poi lessons, a hot mess, a canned ham and a wedding!

All projects needing placement must register in advance online no later than May 31st. http://www.lakesoffire.org/event/theme-camps/

The Placement Team will contact all artists, educators, and theme camps to discuss space and aesthetic needs.

After you’ve registered your camp, please give us your entry for the What Where When bulletin. http://www.lakesoffire.org/event/what-where-when/ You will be contacted for details about your listing.

Someone from your group must be on site by Friday, 6-24, 12:00 noon to hold your reserved placement location.

Maps of the land will be published before the event. You’re encouraged to print your own copy and bring it along.

Theme camps wishing to have sound – even if it’s just a boombox – must advise the Placement Team about the level they expect to have. They will then be placed with consideration to other sound camps and campers. Camps above a certain wattage (tbd) will be subject to special placement.

The deadline for registering theme camps is May 31st, 2011.

FIRE CONCLAVE:

If you want to perform in Saturday night’s conclave around the effigy, you need to sign up here: http://www.lakesoffire.org/event/fire-safety-performance/fire-performers-q-a/

A representative or your group must contact Conclave or sign up at the above link before June 1st, 2011, to apply. Email your shin, Doxie, at shin@lakesoffire.org for more information. Details of participating with Conclave will be sent via email to conclave applicants. As all fire art should be, Conclave is run in a safe, sane, sober and legal manner. Those who wish to participate in conclave will be required to follow that motto and any other requirements of the Shin, Doxie: shin@lakesoffire.org

CAMPING:
Lakes of Fire is a 76 hour outdoor event. You’re expected to rely on yourself for all of your basic needs.

Here are some of the very basics you will need:
Tent, Bedding (sleeping bag/pillow), Changes of clothes (both warm and cool weather), First aid kit, Sense of humor, Rain gear, Matches/lighter, Bug Spray, Swim suit (maybe), Towel, Sun screen, Flashlight, Food, Water/drinks, Ear plugs, Eating utensils, Cookware, Garbage bags, Bacon

Failure to bring these necessities will result in way less of a good time.

You can find more information here: http://www.lovetheoutdoors.com/camping/checklists.htm .

There will be a designated area for RV’s & trailers, open camping, and quiet vs. loud (sound) camping. You will be able to drive your car to deliver your gear, but will then be asked to put your car in our parking lot, where it belongs. If you require electricity, please bring it.

LEAVE AT HOME:
Fireworks – they are illegal in the state of Michigan
Guns or weapons of any kind
Pets – aside from ADA-qualified assistance dogs
Glass – a serious impediment to our Leave No Trace Principle, if it breaks. Cans are preferred.
Firewood from outside the state of Michigan – this is also against the law due to bug infestations.
Illegal substances of any kind.

PRINCIPLES:
Our rules, regulations, and binding principles are simple, and can be found here: http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/about_burningman/principles.html

The distilled version is this:

1) Ask first
2) Protect the community
3) Leave no trace

There are to be no sales or concessions, of any kind, at Lakes of Fire. Do not attempt to hawk your wares, whatever they may be. Lakes of Fire is a commodity-free zone.

SAFETY:
Lakes of Fire is a 76 hour outdoor event. You’re expected to rely on yourself for all of your basic needs.

Please prepare for rain, wind and other extreme weather. Failure to do so may result in way less of a good time. Beware of toxicodendrons-radicans (Poison ivy). Leaves of three? Let it be! toxicodendrons-radicans are found mostly, but not exclusively, in the wooded areas of this property.

Unlike the playa, West Michigan is home to a variety of wild animals. Participants must take measures to ensure their food and trash are properly secured and stored where unwanted raiders cannot find a meal, make a mess, or create a health hazard.

If you’re severely allergic to bee stings, or bug bites, please make sure to take the appropriate precautions. A once-over check for ticks before you leave is a good idea as well.

Please be aware that there are no lifeguards on-duty on the beaches of Lucky Lake. Swim at your own risk, and always with a buddy.

We encourage self-reliance in all situations, but some medical precautions are in place, including a volunteer medical team, and an on-call ambulance if needed.

There will be more information coming soon!

Can’t wait to see you at Lakes of Fire 2011: Anima Mundi!

Love,
