Theme Camps
- March 16th, 2009

Greetings Pyros!
Theme Camp, Art Installation, and Workshop placement requests are now closed. If you need information or have questions related to your theme camp, please contact either Doxie at doxiedetroit@gmail.com or Shirley at pyrotherapist@gmail.com.
We will also be creating a listing of info for Theme Camps, Workshops and Art Projects on the Lakes Of Fire site which can be downloaded and will also be sent to subscribers. So, if you want your message to get out to the participants, get it to us!
What are you bringing?
We need your info well-before this year’s Lakes of Fire to be placed and added to the map.
The comments section of this page is, for now, the spot for information, call-outs, and even outright pimping of your theme camp.
Theme Camp, Workshop, and Art Installation Placement is now closed.
xo,
Shirley & Doxie

Look for this art in Fire Town;
FOUR SQUARE is one incarnation of a larger ongoing flame project by Larz Gaydos and is funded in part by a grant from BURN-Burning Man Chicago
When: Each evening from deep darkness Roughly 10 pm – 2 am
Who: You the participants at LOF will have the opportunity to make fire to play with sound with pattern with shape
The intention is to create a large scale interactive field of fire controlled by YOU the participant. Slower or quicker twists of the handle will produces a variety of flames and associated sound effects. YOU are encouraged to gather your friends and experiment with shapes, with speed , with rhythms, with pattern, and with sound. Enjoy yourself and know that the ultimate goal is to bring a smile to someone’s face (hopefully your own).
Thanks for playing ~ LarzFromMarz

Greeters Station and the Greeters “Great Grapea” Camp
The greeter station will be hosting two hours of kid packed fun at the event Friday. I am not a parent myself, but since we will be coloring and learning about fire safety. I am guessing this will be for kids 12 and younger. Parents are required to attend with their children. There is slow moving traffic that will be going through the area and I need help watching the kids. Most activities will be setup away from the road. Here is what I have planned.
To sign up send an email to hirejb@gmail.com requesting the number of spots you want.
Required Materials:
Camp chair for you and your kid(s)
Cup for you and your kid(s)

Lofers’ Piizza
The Lofers Pizza oven is made of all-natural materials including cob, clay, straw, water, and sand and will act as a permanent installment on the Willow Ranch. We will be making pizzas for participants who wish to bring toppings during our “on” hours, and we deliver too!
You will also have to opportunity to make your own pizza if you want, with some help from out Certified Pizza Masters. We’re located just south of the parking lot in the gulch just north of Sin City. Check us out!
Open-hours will be posted shortly.

Acid Tongue
Another recipient of the Chicago Burning Art Grants- BURN (Bold Urban Renaissance Network http://www.burningart.org/)
A 15′ Devil head, that will project the user’s modulated voice and solenoids activated by user voice input that will spit flames from the mouth, eyes and nose.
In addition there will be a motorized spit barbeque at the front of the ACID TONGUE upon which we will cook a delicious and now expired Goat to celebrate the full release of unabashed EVUHL into the world.
hey, hey, people,, lakes of fire, this is year 2 of the best event on this side of the big pond. last year was the best time ever!!! looking forward too this years event, iam setting up a basecamp ( raven camp) this year, its going to a good one, last year i had leather craft, this year i will have free henna ink art, and someother things too.
stay tuned for more stuff to come….
This will be my first time participating at anything like this. So, I’m kinda confused.. Do you guys just make friends with people and join their camps or what? Any more info would be great!
Good question, Meghan:
The Info-bot recommends that you either try to put together a theme camp all your own, or talk to friends and others who may be attending Lakes Of Fire to see how to get involved in their camps. There’s no “one right way” to go about it!
Fill out the form as best you can, but make it clear that your final details are still “emerging.”
For some reason, the theme camp registration form is giving me a 404. Is it too late to register a camp or is the link just broken?
Camp registration was closed until just today. You should now find that all of the links work properly!
Camp Happy Hour will be presenting:
3XP—- Polka-Dot Painting Party
We will have an open polka dot painting party. Bring a something wearable or fabric and cover it in permanent polka-dots! While the paint drys, leave your item as part of the Polka-Dot Pagoda installation.
Children may attend with supervison…Remember it’s paint…and this is a leave no trace event at a leave no trace camp…
Presenting:
Sketchy’s Tea House and Belly Dancing
We will have a large shade structure with Tea along with some pencils/pens/paper for life drawing and general doodling.
We will also be bringing along some belly dancing folks for performances and possibly some lessons!
Earl also has a large scale live painting project in the works, so watch out for it!
So stop by during the day, have some tea, doodle, and watch some belly dancing!

I know it might be late notice but I wanted to host a small theme camp. The Land of Make Believe is a place anyone can come to create a costume and take it home with them!! I have done this in the past at Apogaea and it was a hit. Learning from the last year I have new and even bettter ideas for it this year. I have applied but am still patiently waiting to hear back. I’m so excited!!!
Building on last year’s Kidsville area, we would like to build a central theme camp/ community gathering space for hosting family activities and general hanging out. I’ve been discussing with a few other L.O.F. parents ideas for coordinating this. What we are aiming for is to gather as many families as possible to participate in and contribute to a larger family community space, with shelter, tables and chairs, and a comfy lounge area. All contributions of time, energy, or objects will help to make a fun and safe haven for families to come together and hang out. We encourage those with kids to camp near us, and hope to cluster related family run theme camps in the same area of town to form a true family community.
Please join the new facebook group for Lakes Of Fire Families, and tell your friends!!!
(If you are anti-facebook and want info, to offer ideas, or to be involved, you can email me at katerialice@comcast.net

i’m interested in putting together a small camp-like art installation but it’ll need some juice. juice as in AC power (dc probably won’t really cut the mustard). Any infrastructure available on this? i’d hate to hook up a tiny noisy honda genny just for me, maybe some of us can share a larger, quieter more efficient one?
The availability of electricity is somewhat limited, and you’ll have to talk to the placement team to see if you can get some. It’s probably a safe bet to plan for bringing out a generator.
“The Freakeasy” is comin’ into town! Bringing our “A” Game and some outta town west coast (nexus-ee) peeps with us! !
Cannot Wait!
Hey there church. I can say that any juice at the event will be reserved for the infrastructure of the event. You are going to need a “geni” my man.
We’d like to build the monolith. We still have to engineer it, but we want it to be completely self contained (i.e., no external guy wires or braces). Obviously it would need no power or any other infrastructure needs, but it would be cool to have it someplace communal. What do we need to do to make this happen?
We are ridiculously excited!
For starters, Seffis, fill out the form above if you haven’t already!
Greetings from the West Coast!
This year, we are erecting two (2) offical Black Rock City Greeters Beacons at the LoF Greeters Station, each with a flame effect device that incoming participants may activate.
The flame effect will be available Thursday and Friday evenings from the time it gets dark to about midnight.

Hi! Cant wait to see you at LoF…is someone going to be doing/bringing body/face painting stuff again this year? Do you need supplies/help? We really had fun last year painting. Let us know!
Looking forward to 2010: A Spaced Oddity. Will be producing the newspaper again this year so be sure to get one on the way out on Sunday – makes a great souvenir.
I’ll be camping with the Parking crew and I have another art installation to bring but one element of it is SURPRISE so I’ll write to Doxie for placement rather than describe it here.
