Location and Travel Information
- April 20th, 2009
Lakes of Fire is located at the Willow Ranch Arts & Events Center at 95 60th Street in Lacota, Michigan.
If traveling by car, you’ll find our site is roughly 2 hours from Chicago, 3.5 hours from Detroit, 4 hours from Milwaukee, or Indianapolis, and 7 hours from Toronto.
If flying is a part of your travel plans, we recommend that you fly into one of the two Chicago-area airports. (Flights to Midway are usually somewhat cheaper, and incidentally Midway is just a little closer to our location than O’Hare.) It’s possible to fly into Kalamazoo or Grand Rapids, Michigan, or into South Bend. Although these cities are closer to our location than either of the major Chicago airports, flights to these smaller, regional airports are usually more costly. Flights to Detroit are often reasonably priced as well, but Detroit is considerably further away from our location than is Chicago.
Amtrak has daily runs from both Chicago and Detroit that stop in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Kalamazoo is just one hour from our location.
Greyhound Bus Lines have a stop in South Haven, Michigan, as well. South Haven is just a short ten-minute ride from our site.

Mr. Grocery is located just three miles from our location.

The excitement is building!
Will the first Great Lakes Regional Burn have direct access to Lake Michigan from the campgrounds?
(If the answer is to revealing for this stage no problem, I’ll just be patient.)
Unfortunately not. The site is approximately 15 minutes from Lake Michigan.
Details of the event location will appear closer to event time.
gk, the Lake in Lakes of Fire currently refers to the Great Lakes states (and Canadian province) that are pulling together to create the event.
I am hopeful that someone within the community will volunter-ipate and create a shuttle service to Lake Michigan. Anyone want to step up and be the rockstar that makes that happen? If so, I’ll be happy to talk to you in my role as Mistress of the Gate to help figure out an effective in / out plan for the shuttle service.
Thanks!

I’m buying my tickets this weekend. I’ll be bringing a generator (very quiet one) solar panels, and a blender for frozen margaritas. I through a toga party at every Interfuse and might do the same at Lakes of Fire with 5 gallons of Interfuse Punch. Gaius
The Amtrak directions mention Kalamazoo, but I believe there is also a Bangor Amtrak stop which is only about 10 miles away. Is that correct? If so, perhaps I could come by Amtrak & bicycle.
Thanks!

You would have to check with Amtrak about that. The Info-Bot is not unaware of any stops in Bangor, MI.
I got tickets into Grand Rapids for a pretty good price, connecting in Chicago, from San Francisco, for Rothbury, the weekend after this.
Just found out about this. Wondering about changing tix!
Google maps says 65 miles from GRR to the site.
To David, yes Amtrak stops in Bangor, Michigan but it looks like only one daily and the train doesn’t get in to Bangor til 8:39pm. Looks like sunset is 8:25pm so you would be biking mostly in the dark- FYI. I would also check to see what Amtrak’s policy is for bicycles before buying your ticket. The train is the 370 Pere Marquette and departs Chicago Union Station at 5:20pm. Looks like a train ticket will cost $27 now for 6/24 but that is subject to change. At least on the way back, the train is at 9am.
There are some small local inland lakes that are a bit closer than Lake Michigan, Lake 11, Lake 14 and Saddle lake. This cluster of lakes is in Grand Junction east of Locata, These are mainly small remote fishing lakes but I believe they all have a public access areas, although they do not have a real beach area, more of a boat launch space and some grassy areas. You should bring a floating device for these lakes. The water will be warmer than lake Michigan. All that said, the beaches in South Haven are really fabulous.
Is this the RideShare Bulletin ? Is anyone coming down from the Beloit WI area ? I have to arrive early for set-up on crew and really could use some help having my cousin picked up. THis will save me 4 hours. Id like to use it getting those carports up especially before dark. Please forward any info by wednesday morning the 23rd. Thank you.
@Cooky
