Hey LoFers!
It was great to see so many amazing Great Lakes folks at Burning Man,
and at our several Decompressions that went down in Michigan, Chicago,
Milwaukee, and elsewhere across the region this fall. If you couldn’t
make it, don’t worry – Toronto’s Decompression is still coming up on
November 12th!
No doubt about it – heads from around the Great Lakes really know how
to get it done! Kudos to all who continue to make these amazing events
a reality.
Lakes of Fire 2012 is tentatively scheduled for June 21-24th, 2012 -
your fourth edition.
And guess what? Great Lakes Experimental Arts is THRILLED to announce
the formation of your very first Art Grants program! In order to do
this properly, though, this community needs an independent Art Grants
Committee. Please scroll to the bottom if you’d like to volunteer for
this critical and exciting task.
Speaking of volunteering, in order continue to grow Lakes of Fire, the
community, as always, needs more volunteers. Here are our currently
needed Team Leads, Co-leads, and importantly, committee, whose
creative energies are basically a requirement to keep this LoF ball
rolling!
CO-LEAD NEEDED – COMMUNICATION:
Are you internet savvy and/or clever with your words? Do you enjoy
bringing relentlessly positive and fun messages to the world? Are you
willing to sit at a desk, typing for long periods of time and poring
over tiny details? Comfortable with the idea of a BCC?
If so, you could be a major player on Team Info-bot. The Info-bot
brings people information about Lakes of Fire; and the jobs are to
inform and educate. Hard-core lovers of words, planning, the bigger
picture, knowing minor details, etc., are welcome to apply. Hit up the
current Info-bot at burn@lakesoffire.org.
CO-LEADS NEEDED – LEAVE NO TRACE
Our all-important Leave No Trace team is tasked with leaving our
homeland – wherever it is – in better shape than we found it. If you
think you can stick around until Monday or possibly even Tuesday after
2012, and you are willing to build a Leave No Trace Team, as well as
personally enact a Leave No Trace plan that works, please hit up the
Info-bot at burn@lakesoffire.org.
Willing brains must be combined with willing backs for the Leave No
Trace position.
FORMING COMMITTEE – ART GRANTS
For the first time, G.L.E.A. will be giving out art grants in 2012. To
achieve success, Lakes of Fire needs committee members from across the
entire upper Midwest/Great Lakes region . . . people who are willing
to commit to several conference calls between now and Lakes of Fire
2012, the event, as well as following up with local recipients.
Your job will be to formulate and then enact an art-granting policy
that will transparently and deliciously make Lakes of Fire an even
more amazing reality. You will create an art granting policy, decide
which applicants receive money, and then gently guide artists through
a process of dispersal, building, and public reporting that makes
Lakes of Fire even better event than it already is, through art. So
get excited, because this could be your group project!!!
Contact burn@lakesoffire.org if you’re interested in joining this committee!
Stay tuned to the website for more details!

Greetings Lofers!
Thanks one last time for making Lakes of Fire 2011: Anima Mundi the amazing experience that it was. Don’t forget to give your organizing team feedback on our participant survey. Just scroll down! It’ll only take a few minutes – PROMISE!
AFTERBURN REPORT:
You can follow this link to get the full details of our Afterburn Report.
Our full financial reports are compiled here.
If you don’t want to scroll through the entire documents, here are some of the highlights:
* Lakes of Fire 2011 had a brand new location; Lucky Lake in Montague, Michigan. http://www.luckylakecampground.com/
* Our new location brought us great new relationships and partnerships with the landowner and the local authorities.
* There was even some (basically) positive local press! Go here and here for the local press’s amusing spin on your event.
* Lakes of Fire 2011 featured 45 Theme Camps, 6 Art installations, and 7 sound camps
* Lakes of Fire 2011 sold all of its 1250 tickets, and 1180 people actually showed up to Lucky Lake campground.
* Some ticketholders may have been turned off by consistent and steady rain all Thursday – day and night. We theorize that this is why a larger percentage than usual didn’t show up.
* G.L.E.A. Inc. spent $38,815.75 making Lakes of Fire 2011 a reality, and this year’s gross receipts from our generous Great Lakes community was $52,594.13. The net profit for 2011 is $13,778.38.
* Moving forward toward to 2012 and beyond, G.L.E.A. Inc. has approximately $30,000.00 in the bank to re-invest in Lakes of Fire . . . for years to come. That’s all thanks to our generous and fabulous participants, by the way. YOU.
TEAM LEADS NEEDED:
Though our experiences at events like Lakes of Fire and Burning Man may at times SEEM to emerge spontaneously from nowhere, the events, and thus our experiences themselves, most assuredly do NOT spontaneously arrive from the ether. They happen because hardcore volunteers and organizers are willing to go about ten extra miles to make them a reality.
Are you ready to become a volunteer Team Lead? If the answer is yes, and the positions described below might be up your alley, please consider clearing the weekend of September 24th from your schedule, then go here.
RADIOS:
Managing our large collection of expensive-to-replace radios has turned into a position that demands one person’s serious attentions. If you can be detail-oriented, and can commit to being very available before, during, and for a short while after Lakes of Fire 2012, tentatively set for June 21st-24th, 2012, this position might be for you.
TICKETING:
This is a really important Team Lead that requires a great deal of internet availability, knowledge of MS Office, Google Applications, patience, and individual interactions with participants who in some cases may be confused and/or frustrated. The more familiar you are with Paypal, the better. Only absolute masters of awesome need apply.
GREAT LAKES C.O.R.E. CHALLENGE GRANT
Finally, by now your Info-bot hopes everyone has heard about the Lakes of Fire Organizers’ Challenge Grant to support the Great Lakes C.O.R.E. project: Donate here.
Give what you can, and the Lakes of Fire organizers’ team will match the wider community’s gifts up to $1,000! No donation is too large or too small, and the first thousand dollars will be DOUBLED!
That’s all until next year!
We’ll see you at the playa!
xoxoxoxo,
The Info-bot
